Motorbikes for women
It
wasn't that long ago that a women riding a motorbike was a rare
site or they were a pillion - but not now. Riding a motorbike is
no longer
for the greasy, leather-clad bloke. With congestion charging and
the huge amount motorbikes to choose from now there are many more
bikes that are suitable for women.
It
is estimated that approximately 15% of all riders are now female
and this number is increasing. This is easy to see where ever you
look, not only are the bikes out there that suit women but you can
buy leathers specially designed for women and more and more women
attend the regular bike meets at Bike shows, racing meets, clubs
and track days.

Motorcycles are becoming smaller, lighter and more manageable every
year. This suits women riders who are generally a smaller build
than their male counterparts.
Motorcycles
used to be bulky, ill-handling and heavy. This all changed in 1992
with the Honda Fireblade. Manufacturers saw the benefits of a decent
power-to-weight ratio and began building smaller, lighter, slimmer
machines with good frames that handled as more and more people took
to two wheels. Motorbikes today, particularly the sports bikes,
are incredibly light and powerful and steer with a mere glance in
the right direction. They’re becoming so tiny that they are
infact better suited for females as the average-sized male tends
to be too cramped when riding - so much so that some manufacturers
are going retro and making bikes more old style.
As
mentioned modern motorcycles are often more suited to girls. On
average, girls are lighter than boys so the bike will accelerate
harder. Being smaller means the riding position is less cramped.
This also means they can crouch down below the screen with no lanky
limbs acting like sails on a boat. At the same time controls are
getting lighter and lever spans shorter and adjustable, making things
easier on smaller hands.
Nowadays
the trend has moved towards making that mountain of power more usable
and easy to manage, with more advanced fuel injection systems and
clever throttle valve controls.
There
are no motorbikes built for women, if a man can ride it, so can
women. However there are some that are more suitable from a height
and weight perspective - these are largely sports bikes however
there are others that are not full on sports bikes however they
are slightly heavier:
