How to fit heated motorcycle grips
Fitting Oxford Heated Grips
These instructions are for fitting Oxford Heated Grips onto a KLR650 however the basics apply to any motorbike.
First you should decide where to put the control box and also where
you intend to run the cables.
Then you will need to remove the original grips that are on the bars.
If you prise the end of the grip up and spray some wd40 or similar between the bar
and the grip, you should be able to twist and slide the grips off easily.
Slide the left hand heated grip onto the left hand bar (do not glue at this point as
you want to make sure it is in the right position).
Twist it round until you are happy with the positioning.
Then put the right hand grip on the right hand bar, aligning it with the left.
Make sure that the cable is not caught and is able to move when you twist the throttle
without catching anywhere.
There is a sleeve which can be fitted to the right hand grip (for a different size bar) but
not needed on this bike.
When you are happy with the positioning of the grips then you can glue the left one to
the left bar.
As there isn't much space around the clocks to mount the control box, I made a bracket to
mount it on.
There are only two wires to connect up. One live and one earth.
The cable is long enough to wire it straight to the battery, but then you have the
possibilty of it still running when you turn the bike off and draining the battery.
I cut into a switched live, from the ignition switch, you could find this with a multimeter.
Then found a good earth point for the earth wire.
All that is needed is to plug in the three cables to the box,one from each grip and
the one from the live and earth cable.
Start the bike and turn on the grips.....adjust the heat setting to whatever you are
happy with.
